On Friday, Room 6 built some world famous cities using staples.  We worked in groups of 4 or 5 for 2 and a half hours to create a city that had skyscrapers made from staples.  We had to use teamwork, the computer and the materials provided to create our cities, watch the video to see the results.

Room 6 at the Supermarket

Last week, Room 6 travelled to the supermarket to complete their Food for Thought programme.  We put what we had learnt about label reading into practice.  After we had looked at labelling of packaged food we then went to the Fruit and Vegetable aisle where we put all the fruit and veges into their colour groups.

At the completion of the programme New World gave us a $50 voucher to spend on making a healthy lunch. Yum!

Magical Mathex Magicians

Carlton School's Year 5 Mathex achieved something special on Wednesday, by placing third in the Wanganui Mathex competition.  The team of Mikayla, Natalie (R4) Kahu (R15) and Room 6's very own Blake answered 13 questions before another school stopped the clock.

Very few teachers at the school can remember a better placing for Carlton School at Mathex proving this team is very special indeed. Watch out Year 6's in 2013!

Nothing complex about Grace's Gold!

Grace S added to her medal tally by writing a great complex sentence about Monkeys.  Grace edged out Joshua O and Corey for the title.  Her winning sentence was: "Monkeys are hairy and come in lots of different colours, they also have opposable thumbs."

PGA Championship Golf

We have been practising our golf swings.  But not outside! We've been hitting the links in our free-time, taking on each other at this great game.

When the weather is better we'll be taking our skills out to the 'school' golf course (thanks in advance Mr McPhun).

In the meantime we'll be shooting birdies and bogies and designing our own courses.

Racecourse Recounts

We've all been writing Racecourse recounts and posting them on our blogs.

The following can be viewed on Damien's blog: http://csdamienwi.blogspot.co.nz/

On Thursday Room 6 went to the Races. First we watched a race then went downstairs to ride a pony. We got to learn what the race horses eat and got to try some of the food. Next  we got to pat the ponies and brush them. After that we  got to ride a pony. That was cool! Next we went upstairs and Bret gave us a book and a plastic horse. I know we had a good time.

Damien has also made some great posts about other school events.

The Amazing Races

On Thursday 3rd February, Room 6 went to the races, it was awesome. Bret, the manager, showed us around.
First we went to the celebrity lounge and that’s where Bret introduced himself. He told us some information about the racecourse, then we watched the first race. “And away they go,” everyone shouted. Number seven took the lead, no wait, number six is catching up. Six was now in the lead heading towards the finish line. Number 6 known as Dashing Dottie has won, announced race commentator Mike O’Sullivan. “Hooray for Number Six,” we all shouted.

On February 3rd, Room 3 came to Room 6 and we spent some time getting to know each other.  We took Room 3 on to the computer and showed them how to copy and paste information and how to open and save a document in MSWord. After we had finished we spent some time on Knowledge Adventure.
